SECTION II

1. A Successful Marriage

“When two hearts become one, even a stable becomes Paradise.”

In the great New York Zoo, there was a small cage with iron bars. Above the door, there was a sign that read, “The most dangerous animal in the world.” Inside the cage, there was a mirror. Visitors would see their reflection in the mirror and read the inscription. St. John Chrysostom says, “Human beings, when given over to evil, become worse than wild beasts, not by nature, as animals are, but by choice” (St. John Chrysostom, Homily on Psalm 139, P.G. 55:419).

Two wild beasts, a tiger and a lion, cannot naturally live in the same cage. They will either destroy each other or rip the cage apart. Yet two rational “beasts,” a man and a woman, can live peacefully together as husband and wife within the same “cage.” How?

They can do so by following the instructions of the Apostle Paul: “Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the Church. Just as the Church submits to Christ, so too should wives submit to their husbands in everything that is reasonable and just.

Husbands, love your wives as you love your own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. No one has ever hated their own flesh. Rather, they nourish and cherish it” (Ephesians 5:21 to 29).

The threefold foundation of a peaceful marriage is love, respect, and the humility to yield to one another.
